Setbacks, unemployment…

What do I do know?

Experiencing setbacks, trial and tribulations… unemployment?  Don’t let your setbacks shut you down completely.  Let the tears and frustrations out, then plan.

That’s right, plan.  We are only human and must express our emotions.  It’s only healthy.  Get out that last good cry or angry outburst.  You are entitled.  But immediately after, get off that pity pot and plan to survive.

Sit down and find out the bare bones of how much will take for your survive on the basics- shelter and food.  Do not include credit cards, cable, mobile phone bills, and other luxury items in this budget.  Realistically, unemployment, if you are blessed with it will only cover rent/mortgage and food, if you are lucky.  If there happens to be anything left after paying your rent/mortgage and purchasing food, you need to save that for true emergencies, unexpected expenses, or if your unemployment/savings runs out before you become employed once again.

If you are unable to afford your rent, consider moving to a more affordable unit in your apartment complex or another house.  Downsize when possible.  Seriously.

Contact your mortgage company to defer payments for about 6 months due to unemployment or your temporary change in your ability to pay.  NACA is a good organization to work on your behalf as an advocate for you.  They work directly in communication with your lender to reduce your payments or defer payments in their SAVE THE DREAM program.  Check out their website at www.NACA.com to learn more about their programs and services.

Contact local charities and churches to see if they can assist you in paying your utilities (gas and electric).  Help is available, be persistent.
